Dominika Cibulkova

Near midnight on a balmy Miami night and the floor of one of the city's hottest nightclubs is heating up. As the DJ cranks up the music, all eyes are drawn to a collection of blonde über-goddesses who are dancing up a storm, attracting lascivious glances from every red-blooded man in the room. But the girls, who are uniformly blonde, leggy and flaunting their perfect bodies in barely-there dresses, aren't the ubiquitous supermodels for which South Beach is famed. No, these are the rising stars of the women's tennis circuit enjoying a rare night out as they strive to become the next Maria Sharapova – who, incidentally, is in the middle of the floor, waving her arms around wildly despite complaining of a shoulder injury earlier in the day.

The occasion is the kickoff party for the Sony Ericsson Open. This is one of the world's largest tennis tournaments after the Grand Slams, but also traditionally the most relaxed thanks to its location on Key Biscayne, a palm-fringed island just south of downtown Miami but a million miles away from the pressures of Wimbledon.
